review of Despicable Me

Last week I saw the movie “Despicable Me”, and I highly recommend it.   It’s a CGI-animated movie, starring Steve Carell.   There are trailers online, of course, but it’s probably better if you don’t watch too many of them, just because some of them show parts of the movie that are better left discovered during the movie.  So I’m not going to say much about the plot and storyline, except that it was great.  And that the main guy wants to steal the moon.  How original is that?

There are some great quotes in it, along with numerous laugh-out-loud scenes.  The main guy’s minions are hilarious, too — they remind me of the rabbids from the video games Raymond’s Raving Rabbids (and their own games, too).  There’s quite a bit of funny randomness in the movie, both in the story and dialogue.  So there’s no hesitation for me to speak on behalf of the staff of Buffet o’ Blog to say you should watch this movie.  (In the interest of full disclosure, some of the staff has yet to see the movie, but that’s because they made excuses and need their priorities refocused.   Perhaps we should have a organization-wide required viewing… Yeah, I think it’s that good.)

So go see it.  Although if a disclaimer is needed, I will say, “Your mileage may vary.”  But if you enjoy this blog, I would expect you to enjoy the movie, too.  The plot of it sounds like some discussions that have happened in these pages.  In fact, we’ve even had an idea for a movie featuring two evil mad scientists competing against each other.

Los Links!

The other day in a Mexican restaurant, I saw a TV commercial for Microsoft’s search engine Bing.  It looked like a parody of a Spanish soap opera.  I’ve since seen it on English TV.  There’s two of them I’ve seen so far, and they’re funny because the acting and script is so bad.   Actually, there’s more bad acting than storyline, which works in terms of randomness.

Los Links, Episode Uno

Los Links, Episode Dos

If you actually want to make more sense of the commercials, there are extended versions of both, which are about a minute long each.

the futuristic world of 2010

For years, scientists and science fiction writers have wondered what life in the future would be like.  Many made predictions for the year 2000 and the next few years after.   While we’re technologically advanced in a number of areas now in 2010, there are some areas we’re so far behind where we should be.  This comic illustrates that well.

tempted with jealousy

Somebody did me wrong today.  They didn’t mean to, so I won’t hold it against them, but it just wasn’t right.  My story begins like many others: I was minding my own business, mowing my yard.  I was trying to get my lawn mowed before the rain came.  My wife was inside cooking supper.  Since we’re trying to lose weight, we’ve been eating healthy meals more than we used to.  She was baking some Cajun-seasoned fish and frying some fresh vegetables (squash, okra, and tomatoes) with Creole seasoning and olive oil.  It’s not a bad meal, even for a meat-and-taters guy like myself.  But while I was mowing, one of my neighbors decided to grill burgers, and the wonderful aroma wafted into my yard.

It really doesn’t matter that I was about to eat fish and vegetables — just about any meal is trumped by home-grilled burgers.  So I found that to be quite rude of them.  I’m outside dripping with sweat from mowing in the crazy heat-and-humidity mixture here in Arkansas, and they’re making me jealous with their grilling.

So if you find yourself in the situation of the person grilling while your neighbor is mowing his yard, it would be incredibly awesome if you were to offer him a burger or hot dog off the grill.  That would make their day, and it would certainly make the rest of the mowing not so laborious.  I’m just sayin’…  🙂
