Why would you say that?!?

couple standing in front of burning barnI was recently visiting the in-laws around Christmas, and the conversation took an unexpected turn.  One person was telling a story they heard on the local news about a couple who were burning trash outside their house but went inside, leaving the fire unattended, and their house caught on fire.  That’s a tragic story, but they learned some “common sense” the hard way.  Anyway, there’s no need to rant on that, since the moral of the story is quite obvious.

After that part of the story, an older country woman said, somewhat agitatedly, “Why were they burning trash outside?”  That piqued my curiosity, as I was eager to hear some further explanation of that statement.  I mean, where else would you burn trash?  (Before anyone rushes to the comments to lecture on why people shouldn’t burn trash, I agree, but some people don’t have trash pickup and live in areas where burning stuff is still allowed.)

I looked around, wondering who would answer her question.  I didn’t know what to say.  There was a short pause (which is rare in those parts), and then the conversation went to a completely different topic.  That was disappointing.  Did everyone else just ignore her?  I wanted to ask about it, but given the general atmosphere at the in-laws at the time, I didn’t want to stir anything up, so I left it alone.  Nonetheless, someone should’ve at least jokingly asked her where she thinks you should burn trash.  It was a missed opportunity.

epic fails in amateur athletics

Some readers have requested more funny videos, so I’m bringing you another one.  It’s easy enough to find funny videos by searching YouTube, but that usually ends up wasting a lot of time, so I don’t do that too often.  This video happens to be a commercial for Liberty Mutual Insurance called Amateur Athletes.  Normally I’d prefer to link to a non-commercial video, but this one is actually pretty good.  It could also be called athletics gone wrong or epic fails in athletics.

If you’re still unsure about whether or not to spend 30 seconds watching this, here’s what happens: There’s a guy who tries to dunk a basketball but fails in a spectacular way, a guy who tries to do a roundhouse kick but learns he’s no Chuck Norris, and a guy throwing a football that starts a fire in a tailgater’s car.  Classic stuff…  I bet they had fun making this commercial.

There needs to be more commercials where stuff catches on fire…  🙂

caption contest, space laser shooting house

For the next caption contest, I want to use a picture from a recent post.  (Hope that’s okay, because I’m doing it anyway!)  We recently talked about creating our own space laser inator, and one of the pictures showed a purple laser burning a house.  I have no actual context for this picture, but that matters not.  You get to make up the context.  (For those of you new here, you can write a story or joke to go with the picture.  The only rules are make it funny and keep it clean.)

caption contest, woman tending garden despite fire

The last caption contest was definitely not action-packed (not that they have to be).  This week’s photo has both calmness and fire at the same time.  How that all fits into the story is up to you.  It involves a woman tending her garden while a big fire with dark clouds of smoke rages nearby.

Let’s see what you can come up with to explain this scenario.  Did the woman have anything to do with the fire?  If not, who did?  What’s burning?  Might this possibly tie in with a previous caption contest?  Is there a way to connect it to current events?  Use your imagination.  Have fun with it.
