the most interesting man in the world

We’ve received another e-mail from guest writer Thomas Wayne, as part of his “Embellished Memoirs of my Life” series:

I’ve been seeing these commercials on TV where some guy claims to be “The Most Interesting Man in the World”.  He’s a lie!  That is me.  He’s advertising DOS version 20, or somethin’ like that, I dunno.   Whatever…  What I do know is that I am the most interesting man in the world.  I don’t know how these commercial producers can sleep at night, after putting out false misinformation like that.  I’m the original “international man of mystery”, a real “distinguished gentleman”.   Anyone who doesn’t know this as common sense is obviously uncultured.  Maybe I should sue them, for defamation of character and misrepresentation.

I’m not surprised to hear that from him.  So what do you think?  Should he press forward with pressing charges?

Who are these Power Rangers on TV?

One day I was flipping through the TV channels, and I saw some show called the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.  It looked like the main characters turned into superheroes, which is normally a great idea for a show or movie, but here something went terribly wrong.  These people weren’t superheroes — it was extremely lame!  So I wondered what was going on…

I figured it must be one of those crazy Japanese game shows that got overdubbed, y’know, one of those that is really weird and doesn’t make much sense.  It turns out I wasn’t too far off in my guess.  It actually is a dub with some new scenes spliced in.  It’s based off the Japanese tokusatsu Super Sentai Series.

It was amazing how many times there was an explosion way behind the Power Rangers, yet it hurt them.  That happened a lot in just this one episode.  And they would fight the bad guys in their normal human form, then turn to Power Rangers with more powers and get beat up some more, then they’d combine into some huge monstrosity with construction equipment coming from out of nowhere to form a giant robot (which sounds kinda cool but was even lamer than the regular fighting).

Aquaman with wavesNonetheless, the show is lame.  I don’t think kids should be watching it.  Kids tend to identify with superheroes, and most children (at least most boys) dream of being a superhero.  So obviously kids need to be watching good superheroes, not lame ones.  If I had any children, they would be watching genuine superheroes, like Superman, Batman, and the other Superfriends (well, except for the wanna-be ones, like Robin, Aquaman, the Wonder Twins, and Marvin & Wendy).  You gotta be careful what you let your kids watch these days.  You wouldn’t want your kids acting like the Power Rangers or Aquaman, would you?  (Ugh!  Perish the thought!)

Mr. T commercial for World of Warcraft

I know I just recently posted an article about funny TV commercials, and I’m not trying to make a habit of this, but this is one of the best commercials ever.  It’s Mr. T in an ad for World of Warcraft.  He’s a “night elf mohawk”.  And he goes off on the “condescending director”.  It is awesome.  I wish more of the ads on TV were like this.

There are also ads by William Shatner who is a “Shaman”, and a recreation of the He-Man opening scene, but none can compare to the one by Mr. T.

funny TV commercials

It’s rather unfortunate that most TV shows now contain as much commercials as actual program.  If the advertisers would put a little more effort into their commercials, using some creativity and humor, it wouldn’t be quite so bad.  At least there are a few that do, even though it’s a low percentage.

Today I’m going to link to a couple of funny commercials that I’ve seen recently.  One is for cereal.  Just by the title, you may think it’ll be boring, because it’s about bran cereal, but it’s got all kinds of visual puns in it, about being “regular”.  So check it out.

The other commercial is a newer one for , where a young boy brings his jam box with him to the dinner table, playing a “funky” beat and getting down with it.  He gets in the groove and times his eating to the beat.  It’s funny to see how his parents respond.  🙂
