an expensive practical joke

The pitchers of the Chicago Cubs played a unique practical joke on their strength coach during spring training this year.  They totally destroyed his car!  They smashed the windows, punctured the roof, peeled up the trunk, and tied the doors closed.  They left some baseball bats and balls around the car, so he figured it was some of the pitchers.

They let him fume for a while, and he couldn’t figure out how to tell his wife about it, because it was her car.  But then the pitchers took him back to the parking lot and gave him the keys to a brand new Nissan Xterra SUV.

It seems wasteful to destroy a car like that, even if it needed to be replaced, because someone else might want it.  But I imagine the look on his face was priceless…  and I figure they had fun destroying his car…

add your own captions, pt 1

Today I’m going to add a new feature to the blog.  It’s called, “Say What?”  How it works is very simple.  I will post a picture, and you add the captions for it.  You can write from the perspective of the people in the photograph, or you can write as an announcer, or you can take any other point-of-view you can think of.  It’s that simple.  The only rule is to obey the language rules of the website — basically, keep it clean.

Let’s get started.

a logic puzzle featuring Fab

Here’s a true story that doesn’t make sense until you figure something out, so it’s kinda like a logic puzzle.  It’s not too hard — I’m not gonna make you think too much on a Monday.  Ready?

One of our regular readers here, Fab, was out riding his bicycle one day, when he went by the airport.  There’s a road that runs parallel to the runway, and there was an aircraft taking off.  He decided to race it down the runway.  And he actually won!

I know, this seems confusing if you know Fab, because he isn’t the most swooft (swift) of athletes.  But it actually happened.  So the question is, how did he accomplish this?  Leave your guesses in the comments.

smashing a roadster in slow-motion

This link isn’t funny, per se, but it is somewhat interesting in that a sports car gets smashed during crash testing.

Here’s a video of the Tesla Roadster (an electric sports car) being smashed from different angles, in super slow-motion because it was recorded at a thousand frames per second.

This footage cost the company about a million dollars per minute, but I’m glad they’re going through all that effort and expense to make vehicles safe.

Speaking of such things, perhaps they need to combine old and new technologies to make vehicles safer.  Some older vehicles are made of steel, which holds up pretty well in a wreck.  Mango-Man has an old 1963 Bel-Air, and the even the dash is made of steel!  However, that car lacks modern amenities like seat belts and air bags, so an upgrade would definitely be needed.  That would be cheaper for manufacturers than having to do all the modeling on the body and frame.
