a new perfect day to be outside holiday

The past few days have had near-perfect weather, particularly after summer when it’s too hot with too much humidity.  I’ve heard several people say it’s too good of weather to be inside working, and I’ve had that thought myself.  So what we need to start is a floating holiday for each Spring and Fall that’s based on the weather.  At least once each season, when the weather is perfect, everyone should get the day off to do whatever they want outside.  Various groups could sponsor pick-up games for sports, where people could just show up and play ball (football, basketball, baseball, tennis, etc.), and there could be picnics and tail-gate parties (because grilling would be ideal at these times).

Somebody needs to make this happen…  (Hint: If one of our state representatives were to get this started, I’m sure they would pick up some votes for actually doing something cool that the people want.)

celebrating Juneteenth

I just heard that today is a holiday.  Nobody told me to take the day off work!  So I did some research, so I won’t miss this opportunity next year.

June 19 is Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day.  The day is to commemorate the announcement of the abolition of slavery.  The holiday started in Texas in 1865 but is now recognized in 31 states, including Arkansas.  The name Juneteenth is a combination of the words June and nineteenth, which is called a portmanteau.  (You learn something every day.)

I’ve been told the day is traditionally celebrated with a large feast served as an all day meal in a park or outdoor space, and that food typically includes barbecue, fried chicken, greens, baked bread, red soda, pies, home-made ice cream, and watermelon.

Did you notice the part that said “all day meal”?  There was also a mention of fried chicken and barbecue.  That’s what I’m talkin’ about!  🙂  Unfortunately I don’t know anyone having a party for this, but now you know, so there’s no excuse for next year.

near-tragedy at Thanksgiving feast

pecan-pieThe first place I went for my annual Thanksgiving feast was great, except that no one brought a pecan pie.   I’m sure this was just an oversight, but it sure is a big one!   Having pecan pie on Thanksgiving Day is more American than apple pie!  Fortunately, the second place I went for Thanksgiving had a freshly-made pecan pie.  Mmm…

The day… was saved…

For those of you wondering, yes, I do have two annual Thanksgiving feasts per year.  🙂  It seemed like a good idea when this holiday tradition started, and I really enjoy it, so I see no reason to stop it.  Besides, since diets don’t apply on holidays, who’s counting calories?

what Valentine’s Day means to some

flowersToday is Valentine’s Day, a day when it’s very profitable to sell roses.  I heard a rumor that it might be Mango-Man’s favorite holiday of the year, because this is about the only time it’s acceptable for him to be seen in public looking at flowers to buy.  He hasn’t said this, and I’m sure he will vehemently deny it to try and salvage his image, but it sounds true enough to post here.  🙂
